Bad news for fans of television and Stephen King tonight, guys.
Castle Rock, the Hulu/JJ Abrams series based on the labyrinthine works of Stephen King has had the plug pulled before it managed to get a third season.
Here’s the deal, despite drawing on King works such as Misery and Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption from the book Different Seasons, the series played very loosely with King’s world – all of which centred around the small Maine town of Castle Rock – which was probably because, despite him being the inspiration, he wasn’t involved in the series’ creation (here).
Honestly, it lost me in season one when one of my favorite King characters, Sheriff Alan Pangborn (played by Scott Glenn – no problem there at all) met a demise that contradicted what we already knew from King’s novels.
Anyway…
The series has been canceled at Hulu, which is a shame because, had they done it right and created a series that adapted the books of King each season, rather than do their own direction with his creations, they could have had a heck of a show on their hands with a potential connected universe which would have made the Arrowverse look like an episode of Coronation Street.
So, there you have it, King fans. Did you like the show? Will you miss it? Let me know your thoughts, gang…
