Ice Warriors set to return to Doctor Who?

February 12th, 2013 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

Rumours have been rife about what monsters are coming back for the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. Well we know the Cybermen and Sontarans are back. The Great Intelligence returned last Christmas in the Snowmen but will he back along with his Yeti servants? God I hope so. The three biggies have been the Zygons, the Yeti and the Ice Warriors and now it has been confirmed that the latter are back with a vengeance.

The Ice Warriors, the original inhabitants of Mars, will be back in Mark Gatiss’s submarine story which is as yet untitled. Scenes have been glimpsed in the new trailer for the series which airs at Easter and rumour is we have already seen the Ice Warriors in that trailer albeit in disguise.

Originally encountered by the second Doctor, the reptilian Ice Warriors proved an instant hit and a fan favourite. They would return in Seeds of Death then twice in Jon Pertwee’s era in the Peladon saga where they became good guys as part of the Galactic Federation in Curse of Peladon before returning to baddie form in Monster of Peladon.

They have been asked for for years by fans and almost returned in the aborted Colin Baker sixth story Mission to Magnus. They have featured heavily in novel form as well as comic strips and the Big Finish audio plays. And now they are back. But with every old foe having had a 21st century make over, what will they look like? The countdown has begun.
