It’s official Doctor Who’s universe is about to get much, much bigger… and not just on the inside

In case you had any doubts, 2023 is the year that Doctor Who finally gets back on track and actually improves on what it’s been since its return in 2005.

And a new image of Ncuti Gatwa shows that big thinks are coming.

The images below (click to expand) we taken at Bad Wolf Studios, the home of new Doctor Who under the leadership of returning showrunner Russell T Davies:

And the images have the upcoming (this Christmas) 15th Doctor Gatwa in front of signage that reads ‘THE HOME OF THE WHONIVERSE’ with a very stylised image of Gatwa to the left of the text – an image that’s very reminiscent of the art of the classic Doctor Who comics of the 70s and 80s.

But why is the image so interesting? Well…

When Russell T Davies took Doctor Who back with Christopher Eccleston in 2005, he soon opened the way for spinoffs Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures and the not-long-for-this-world Class and we’ve known for a long time that, now that he’s back, Davies has plans, BIG plans, for where Doctor Who goes next.

“There should be a Doctor Who channel now,” Davies said last year, “You look at those Disney announcements, of all those new Star Wars and Marvel shows, you think, we should be sitting here announcing The Nyssa Adventures or The Return of Donna Noble, and you should have the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors together in a 10-part series. Genuinely.”

And fans have long called the world of Doctor Who and its related spinoffs and related shows the Whoniverse… and now we see ‘Home of the Whoniverse’ on the walls of Bad Wolf Studios… and we’re very excited.

While still a BBC series, the new series of Doctor Who will also be heading to Disney+ and fans have speculated that Disney’s attachment will see Doctor Who get better budgets and bigger plans than ever before, especially since The BBC seemed, for whatever reason, to be trying to derail the show at every turn.

But no longer.

Davies is back, Gatwa is coming and the Whoniverse is about to explode. And we’re pacing the floor in excited anticipation.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
