James Wan and Peter Ocko developing new Robocop TV series

The more things change, the more they stay the same, huh?

Robocop is heading for your TV screens, Nerds and Nerdettes!

Just like he did in animated form in 1988 and again in 1994 only this time it was live-action; however, this new series sounds more like it could actually do something great with the character rather than just dilute the original movie like the sequels, shows and, sigh, reboot all did.

This time out, Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies and Black Sails’ Peter Ocko is set to write and act as showrunner with James Wan exec producing under his Atomic Monster production company. That’s pretty heavy hitters for a rebirth that, ever since 1987’s iconic movie, the franchise has been crying out for.

According to Variety, the series. being produced by Amazon MGM Studios, will follow the original movie’s storyline: “A giant tech conglomerate collaborates with the local police department to introduce a technologically advanced enforcer to combat rising crime — a police officer who’s part man, part machine.”

Over the years, we have had, as mentioned above, various incarnations of director Paul Verhoeven and star Peter Weller’s iconic character and we have come close to other versions too with Neil Blomkamp at one stage developing a new movie and then a series about the villainous Dick Jones (played in the original movie by Ronnie Cox) and how he became such an evil monster, but all of these have fallen to the side.

Robocop prequel series based around Dick Jones being developed

I was a massive fan of the first movie and I would even say I enjoy Robocop 2 but after that, the series has been really badly handled, but given the biting wit of Verhoeven’s movie and the bizarre time we now live in, i’d imagine a Robocop series could really top The Boys if done right. Hopefully Ock and Wan know this and don’t focus just on the action and violence, but rather focus on just how smart the concept actually was.

I’m sure they will

What say you all? A new Robocop? Has it potential if done right? Or is this a franchise that needs just to be left to die? Let me know…

WATCH: Colonel Robocop is the new face of KFC… it hurt to write that

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
