Ooooooooh…. this is interesting!
It’s been confirmed that John Simm will return to Doctor Who this season as The Master, despite having regenerated into Michelle Gomez’s Missy at some point after the 2010 New Year’s Day episode.
This has always been something that has bugged me about Doctor Who’s long history – why can’t modern Doctors face old versions of Daleks, The Master, Cybermen etc (although I do of course realise that time passes and things change in real life that can prevent such meetings) and finally we may see this addressed in the show, after all several generations of The Doctor have met several times in the show’s history.
John Simm says: “I can confirm that it’s true, thanks to the power of time travel I’m back. It’s always a pleasure to work with this great team of people and I can’t wait for you all to see what the Master gets up to in the next series. “
Steven Moffat, writer and executive producer, says: “Nothing stays secret for long on Doctor Who but you’ll have to wait a little bit longer to see exactly what the Master is up to and how he makes his return to face the Doctor. It’s been a huge pleasure to have fan favourites John Simm and Michelle Gomez face to face in the same role! It’s not often you get to see a solo personality clash.”
This could be part of something big throughout this series of Doctor Who as we have already seen the return in the trailer of the classic Mondas Cybermen who we haven’t seen since the era of Sylvester McCoy…
What does it all mean? Will The Doctor face two versions of The Master this year? Here’s hoping…
Doctor Who returns to BBC One with episode one The Pilot at 7:20pm on Saturday 15 April.
