The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension series that Kevin Smith has been trying to get up and running has been hit with a legal dispute over rights, delaying the production until it’s finished.
MGM has filed a lawsuit against original movie director Walter Richter and writer Earl Mac Raunch. The lawsuit is all to do with rights to the film and there hasn’t been any news of a quick end in sight.
The true reason for the lawsuit isn’t clear but it seems that MGM is pressing this suit because they want the new series to be made. It’s therefore likely there is a conflict of interest.
The tv series will be based around the same ideas of the original film, released back in 1984, and is likely to follow on where it couldn’t. The film itself gained reasonable ratings from critics as well as a cult following but it lacked in its box office takings.
