Man, this is worrying news, especially if Sony has any real hopes of keeping their Spider-man universe going.
We reported a while back that, below, that Spider-verse directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are developing a Spider-man: Noir TV Series with Nicolas Cage playing the role in live-action that he voiced in Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse but it seems that things have taken an unwelcome turn.
Described by Cage, left, as “more of a Pop-art mashup, like a Lichtenstein painting with some sparkle to it… It’s not really people beating people up. Monsters are involved,” the series has lined up Irish legend Brendan Gleeson as the villain of the piece, most likely mob-boss Silvermane.
The official synopsis reads: We follow Ben Reilly (Nicolas Cage), a private investigator, as he stumbles down a rabbit hole of corruption in 1933 New York City, while also establishing his past as a superhero. Reilly investigates the death of Edward Addison, which leads him to discover that the Mayor is up to something nefarious that involves crime boss Silvermane and femme fatale Yuri Watanabe.

However, it seems that Lord and Miller, whose final Spider-verse movie, which should have released this year, is now likely not going to come out until 2026, has split from Sony TV and, as such, will no-longer be overseeing Spider-man Noir.
It seems that the duo, who had a five-year contract with Sony TV, split ways after a ‘heated fight’ over Noir’s budget.
This is a shame as they’re unquestionably talented and after Sony’s (so far) abysmal Spider-man adjacent movies such as Morbius and Madame Web, the duo’s Spider-verse movie were outstanding and the only successes Sony had in the new Marvel universe.
Nevertheless, the duo have prior form, having parted ways with Disney/Lucasfilm after almost finishing the shoot on Solo: A Star Wars Story, leaving Ron Howard to come in reshoot a large portion of the movie. They also were notoriously difficult to work with on the Spider-verse movies, with veteran animators describing their managerial style as “death by a thousand paper cuts”.
Where this leaves the Spider-man: Noir show – they were also developing a live-action Silk series which was cancelled a few months back) – is anyone’s guess for now but given the talent involved, I really hope it still happens, I just don’t know if it will be as good as it would have been under Lord and Miller.
Beyond the Spider-verse will also be their last Spider-man movie as of right now.
Let me know your thoughts, guys.
