Luther fans rejoice! Yes, according to the Daily Mail the story of Idris Elba’s Luther is far from over… or hasn’t truly started depending on your point of view.

Creator Neil Cross was at the Edinburgh TV Festival at the weekend and confirmed that a prequel movie is in the works, with a script finished and everything ready to roll:  “It will follow his [Luther’s] career in the earlier days, when he is still married to Zoe, and the final scene in the film is the first of the initial TV series.”

He said the reason for a prequel was so they could bring back certain characters who would otherwise have to be left out given their fate in Season 3 – doing a Whedon were we, Neil? –  he also noted that, along with Elba’s Luther, DS Justin Ripley (Warren Brown), Luther’s wife Zoe (Indira Varma), and DCI Ian Reed (Steve Mackintosh) would all be returning. He also speculated that comeos may occur from  DSU Rose Teller (Saskia Reeves), DSU Martin Schenk (Dermot Crowley), Benny Silver (Michael Smiley), Mark North (Paul McGann), or DCI Erin Gray (Nikki Amuka-Bird).

Fans of the series will know that, due to the movie happening before events in the first series, the character of Alice Morgan will not be appearing, but fear not, says Cross, as he has plans for an Alice spin-off:  “The BBC is very interested in the project. The truth is I absolutely adore Alice! We’re kind of thinking very loosely of a mix between The Talented Mr Ripley and The Last Seduction.”

Exciting times for Luther fans…

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
