Get ready for the new daily show

Marvel’s Squirrel Girl and The New Warriors get a comedy TV series

April 5th, 2017 by Marc Comments

So, let’s be honest, the idea of Squirrel Girl coming to TV isn’t exactly new (here), heck there was even a fan debate over whether she should be played by Anna Kendrick (here) or Stranger Things’ Barb, actress Anna Purser (here).

But now we’ve learned that not only is Squirrel Girl, AKA Doreen Green, “a totally empowering fan girl who is tough, optimistic and a natural leader”, coming to TV, but she’s bringing the New Warriors with her.

Huh?

Yup, it seems that Freeform! and ABC are producing the series which will appear in 2018 alongside the other Marvel show, Cloak and Dagger (here).

The new series will consist of 10-parts of 30-minute live-action comedy, which sounds similar in some format ways to DC’s Powerless.

Although there’s no casting news yet (come on guys, hire Purser!) we do know it’s looking like it’ll be written by Cougar Town and Scrubs’ Kevin Biegel, so the quality is certainly there.

The official synopsis reads:

New Warriors revolves around about six young people with powers living and working together. With powers and abilities on the opposite end of the spectrum of The Avengers, the New Warriors want to make a difference in the world … even if the world isn’t ready. With Freeform focused on a group dubbed “becomers” — those experiencing a series of firsts in life including first loves and first jobs — New Warriors explores the journey into adulthood, except in this world, they’re not quite super and not yet heroes and the guys can be as terrifying as bad dates.

“Freeform’s mission is to deliver incredible content to young adults and Marvel Television seamlessly aligns with that mission — we couldn’t be more proud to collaborate with them on Marvel’s New Warriors,” said Karey Burke, exec vp programming and development, while Marvel head of TV Jeph Loeb said: “Marvel’s New Warriors have always been fan favorites and now particularly with the addition of Squirrel Girl, they are Marvel Television favorites as well. After the amazing experience we’ve had with Freeform on Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger we can’t think of a better place for our young heroes.”

No word of whether or not the show will be an official part of the MCU but we imagine with ABC already putting out Agents of SHIELD and soon The Inhumans and with Netflix having The Defenders shows it would be very unlikely that the show along with Cloak and Dagger wouldn’t be part of the dame universe.

What do you all say? Are you excited for the New Warriors? Let us know…
