Now that Disney own Star Wars, our dreams of the much talked about Star Wars Underworld TV show are, safe to say, well dashed.

And while we have no doubt that somewhere in Disney HQ plans are afoot for a Star Wars TV Series, we will often dream of what might have been.

And now we have a pretty good idea thanks to God of War creative director Cory Barlog who has revealed that the new gang’s origins lie in the no disposed of Star Wars series.

Barlog revealed that the series would have been closely tied to the then in production 1313 game, which is why he got so close to the series.

Huh?

The new GoW game’s main character Kratos is a more sympathetic bad guy rthan previously thought, he has a side that many villains do not and his inspiration was in Emperor Palpatine!

“Probably the really small beginnings of this idea, the germination of this,” he says, “[was] when I was working at Lucas, I was allowed to go up to the ranch and read the scripts.

“It was the most mind-blowing thing I’d ever experienced. I cared about the Emperor. They made the Emperor a sympathetic figure who was wronged by this f#@king heartless woman. She’s this hardcore gangster, and she just totally destroyed him as a person. I almost cried while reading this. This is the Emperor, the lightning out of the fingers Emperor. That’s something magical. The writers who worked on that, guys from The Shield and 24, these were excellent writers.”

This is a fascinating idea because, while we saw the more human side of Palpatine in Episodes I-III, we were at no point led to believe he was a ‘good guy’, so seeing him in that way would be an exciting dimension to his legacy.

We’ve only ever seen Anakin Skywalker as the tragic figure in the Star Wars story, so seeing Sheev Palpatine’s story – one that isn’t necessarily part of the Skywalker story that the movies focus on, would be a potentially awesome idea and, given the talent behind the scripts, we really hope that some day we’ll get a chance to delve into that side of the Star Wars universe.

What do you think? Could Palpatine ever be a truly sympathetic character in your eyes?

Let us know…

Oh and don’t forget that Kathleen Kennedy hinted at recently as last Decemeber that 1313 and Underworld are gone but not necessarily dead… (here)

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
