For a while now we have been following the development of a Smallville animated series which was set to pick up where the hit Superman: The Early Years TV series ended off in the 90s but now it seems it has hit a bit of a stumbling block.
The original 2000s series had a young Superman, played by Tom Welling, earning the blue, red and yellow suit but sadly never really showed the hero in full-flight; it was a deliberate choice at the time but something the fans really wanted to see. With the cast all a bit older now, an animated series has been developed and was waiting for the go-ahead from Warner Bros and DC Comics.
However, it seems the new new DCU is now causing the series to slip into development hell.

“Warners has obviously gone through a lot, and I think the fact that they are in the process of rebooting ‘Superman’ again, kind of unfortunately, I think, keeps our thing off the table for a bit,” says co-creator Alfred Gough.
We all know that this July we’re getting James Gunn’s first big-screen outing in the DCU with Superman, starring David Corenswet and it seems that two Supermen (Supermans?) right now is a bad idea.
Speaking with Smallville stars Tom Welling and Micheal Rosenbaum, who played Lex Luthor, on the Talk Ville podcast, Gough continues: “Everything comes around in one form or another, I just read the other day that they are rebooting ‘Buffy’ for Hulu.”
After the fall of the DCEU, DC was taken over by James Gunn and Peter Safran and Gough reckons that that is detrimental to the Smallville series: “That is the thing, I think the problem with most projects in development in any studio and/or any network is regime change,” he says.
With Gunn focused on the DCU being explored in live-action, animation, comics, TV, film and games, it’s understandable that he’s not keen on developing another Superman project, although Smallville was very much its own thing back in the day and it’s likely that once the DCU gets properly established, it’s something that might eventually get its moment in the sun.
