What is happening? Are we on the verge of seeing the Arrowverse return? Or is star Stephen Amell just winding us up?
Amell played Oliver Queen/the Green Arrow in The CW’s Arrow from 2012 to 2020, but it was much bigger than that. Joining Arrow in 2014 was Grant Gustin in The Flash and that was when the so-called Arrowverse really kicked off.
Over the next few years, the Arrowverse grew to encompass Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, Superman, Constantine, Black Lightning, Naomi, Gotham Knights, and even expanded to take in the multiverse, including Smallville, Stargirl, Lucifer, iZombie and so much more.
It was a massive universe which, while deeply flawed, was bigger and bolder than the MCU or DCEU and in its heyday, it was unmissable TV that gave us DC shows three or more nights a week.
Ah, good times.
After the death of the Arrowverse, The CW decided that it was cheaper and more profitable to produce reality TV rather than big(ish) budget shows like Arrow or The Flash – there was a big void in the superhero TV sphere.
A void that might be about to be filled again… maybe?
Taking to social media, Amell posted a sketch of ‘the vigilante’ (his moniker in the first season), with the Arrow theme playing over the top as Amell peers over his shoulder at the sketch. He wrote on the post: “Just when I think I’m out…”
Honestly? No idea.
There are several possible reasons, really. It could be nothing; Amell just messing with his fans. It could be because the DCU is about to explore the multiverse and will meet this version of Green Arrow and the Flash. IT could turn out that James Gunn wants Amell and Gustin to be the DCU version of these characters. It could be a podcast. It could even be to mark the 20th anniversary of The CW, which first aired on September 20th, 2006.
It’s going to be fun waiting to see if anything comes from this, though I have to say The CW’s 20th anniversary being almost to the day that Amell posted his video seems like it could be the winner…
