The Batman writer and Netflix bringing us a Terminator animated series

Oooooh…with the past few disappointing entries in the Terminator franchise, it seems we might finally get an entry that’s worth getting excited about.

Yes, Netflix and Skydance are coming together to give us a new Terminator animated series and, excitingly, it’s going to be showrun by Mattson Tomlin, writer of The Batman and it’ll be made with Production IG who brought us Ghost in the Shell: SAC-2045 and Haikyuu!, so the talent is definitely there.

“Anyone who knows my writing knows I believe in taking big swings and going for the heart,” Tomlin said in a statement, “I’m honored that Netflix and Skydance have given me the opportunity to approach Terminator in a way that breaks conventions, subverts expectations and has real guts.”

John Derderian, Vice President of Japan & Anime at Netflix, added: “Terminator is one of the most iconic sci-fi stories ever created–and has only grown more relevant to our world over time. The new animated series will explore this universe in a way that has never been done before. We can’t wait for fans to experience this amazing new chapter in the epic battle between machines and humans.”

President and CEO of Production IG, Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, humourously said: “I asked my long-time friend and colleague Mamoru Oshii what he thought about the idea of turning Terminator into an animated series.

“His response was ‘Ishikawa, are you out of your mind?’ At that instant, I was confident we should get on board. As huge fans, our team at Production IG is putting their heart and souls into creating this series. We hope fans will enjoy it!”

Personally, I have felt for a long, long time that Terminator needed a change of direction – forget the story of a killer cyborg from the future trying to kill someone who will play a big role in the future and give us something new; Skynet could have sent Terminators all through time with different roles, let’s follow some of those stories and do something truly unique, I mean, time travel and killer cyborgs… the sky(net) is the limit.

Are you excited for a Terminator animated series? Let me know your thoughts, gang.
