Get ready for the new daily show

The first chapter in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU, Creature Commandos, assembles its cast UPDATED

April 12th, 2023 by Marc Comments

Back in January James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed the first phase of their new plan for DC, the DCU; dubbed ‘gods and monsters’, this will be new lineup marks the end of the DCEU of old and the beginning of their new vision.

At the time, Gunn stressed that “animation will lead into live-action and will lead back into animation again,” meaning that the animated series will be set in the same universe/reality as the movies. He also stressed that some character will appear in animation, live-action, movies, games etc and when they do, they will be played/voiced by the same actor/actress throughout, adding to the shared universe feel of it all.

Gunn also recently outlined when and in what order we can expect to see these shows, but it looks generally like this:

The first five movies:
Superman: Legacy – July 11, 2025
The Authority
The Brave and the Bold
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow
Swamp Thing

The Television projects:
Creature Commandos
Waller
Lanterns
Paradise Lost
Booster Gold

So, we now have the cast list for Creature Commandos, the first chapter in the DCU, and it’s pretty impressive:

Frank Grillo is Rick Flagg Snr
David Harbour is Eric Frankenstein
Maria Bakalova is Princess Ilana Rostovic
Indira Varma is The Bride
Zoe Chao is Nina Mazursky
Alan Tudyk is Doctor Phosphorus
Sean Gunn is Weasel (returning from Suicide Squad)
Steve Agee is John Economos (returning from Peacemaker, Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods)

As stated above, if these guys excluding Agee who already is in live-action, appear in live-action, they will be played by the actors above – in fact, Gunn has said on social media that Grillo’s Flagg Snr will definitely be appearing across all media.

The official synopsis has it that ‘The seven-episode show focused on the creation of a black ops team out of prisoners’ – it needs to be pointed out that while this sounds very like Suicide Squad, in the comics, Creature Commandos existed first.

Despite being a big fan of Zack Snyder’s DC movies as well as all that came after it, I am stoked to see how this all turns out and really hope for it to be great.

What say you all?

UPDATE: The series will arrive in 2024!
