Tom Sturridge nabs led role in The Sandman series with full cast revealed by Netflix

January 30th, 2021 by Marc Comments

Exciting times as it was beginning to feel like we’d never see movement on Netflix’s Sandman series… until now.

The series, based on the hit Vertigo/DC comic from writer Neil Gaiman, tells the story of Dream/Morpheus, the master of sleep and dreams, who wanders between our world and the next, having bizarre adventures, full of crazy characters in both realities. The comic is an utter classic and if done right, we’re looking at some seriously amazing TV that we here at FTN hopes is more Good Omens than American Gods.

Anyway, we reported a while ago (here) that Tom Sturridge was rumoured to have nabbed the title role and, it seems we were on the money with Netflix confirming Sturridge as Dream and Game of Thrones star Gwendolin Christie as Lucifer.

They also confirmed Additional characters have been cast with Lucienne being played by Vivienne Acheampong, The Corinthian by Boyd Holbrook, Roderick Burgess by Charles Dance, Abel by Asim Chaudhry, and Cain by Sanjeev Bhaskar.

The series was originally supposed to have gone before the cameras in April last year but, well, we all know what happened and now it seems it’s just waiting for a date to get the ball rolling.

Gaiman previously pointed out some changes for the story from the source material: “The Netflix version is going to begin in 2021, so Morpheus will have been kept prisoner in the Netflix version for 105 years rather than 70 years.”

In the original comic it begins with the world in torment as Dream has been imprisoned and no-one can sleep so it seems that will hold true here too but be extended a bit.

On previous attempts to get the story told, he said: “The technology wasn’t there. The budget wasn’t there. The audience wasn’t there. The delivery systems weren’t there. The idea of going off and doing Preludes & Nocturnes and The Doll’s House as our first 10 episodes, nobody would’ve let us do that. The world wasn’t ready. So, it’s ready now. They caught up with us.”

We know that series one will contain 11 episodes and cover the stories Dream a Little Dream of Me, A Hope in Hell, The Sound of Her Wings, 24 Hours and Collectors – it will be interesting to see how it’s handled as the comics, being DC, had characters like Scarecrow and Constantine in them so we’re wondering how this will be handled on Netflix as HBO Max seems to be looking after most DC properties now.

No word on when the series will be released but we can’t wait and we’ll keep you all posted.

Are you excited? If you’re not, you’re wrong.
