HBO renews the show for an additional 2 further seasons after the one currently airing.
After the award winning show’s impressive 6.6 million viewer rating for the first episode of its fourth season (the highest since The Sopranos), HBO has decided to give the show an extended lease of life with not one but two additional seasons, ensuring that the show will run until 2016.
In a statement Michael Lombardo, president of HBO Programming said “Game of Thrones is a phenomenon like no other, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, along with their talented collaborators, continue to surpass themselves.”.
The show airs Sunday evenings in the U.S. on cable channel HBO and in the UK, for the first time this season with a simulcast that airs at 2 a.m. at the same time as HBO, on Sky Atlantic.
