TV REVIEWS: FTN Reviews Arrow Season 06 Episode 16: The Thanatos Guild

Man, you have to give credit to Malcolm Merlyn, even when he dies, he’s not really gone. “The Thanatos Guild” might have been another “side story” for Arrow’s main plot, but it did serve as a good sendoff between two of its beloved characters, and in a way that was both true and fair to them both.

The moment you saw the beginning with a goodbye cake for Thea and Roy, you know it was going to get derailed. Enter Athena, the leader of a new branch of the League of Assassins called the Thanatos Guild. They needed Athena to find a map, which brought Nyssa into the fold because she doesn’t want them to get it. You can probably predict the plot from there.

As basic as it was, the real crux was Thea trying to decide what she wanted. At first, she just wanted to leave with Roy, but then after seeing the danger the Guild presented, it was impossible for her to leave. And then, when she found out what they were really after, she knew what she had to do.

Seeing the different angles and characters play into Thea’s story was great. Oliver wanted her to finally live her life, Roy wanted to be with Thea and take her away from it all, Nyssa felt that Thea owed her father one last debt, and so on and so forth.

I was REALLY worried that the writers would split up Thea and Roy again…I mean, let’s face it, that’s what they do in shows like this (I’m looking at you Supergirl…). But thankfully, they did the right thing and brought the two together to go with Nyssa to destroy the recently found Lazarus Pits. Could this be a view into Season 07? We’ll see.

On the ironic side, the side story of Dinah and Curtis wasn’t totally bad! They were continuing to flesh out who was a dirty cop under Diaz’s pay role, and their suspicion came to the head of the unit. I’m curious and surprised to see the Vertigo drug back in play, but knowing Diaz, there’s a reason. And with the two now sure Hill is dirty, this could lead to some interesting things.

But seriously, Curtis flirting with that cop? yeah…no.

In the end, “Thanatos Guild” was strong in its use of pushing Thea and Roy down a new path (btw, keep the hat Roy!), but I do hope we get back to the Diaz storyline fully soon.
