TV REVIEWS: FTN Reviews Legends Of Tomorrow Season 03 Episode 15: Necromancing The Stone

March 20th, 2018 by Todd Black Comments

Legends of Tomorrow continues to be a show that truly enjoys its material and the characters that use it, and “Necromancing The Stone” brought forth a terrifyingly fun episode that may lead to a major team addition next season. If you haven’t heard, the people behind the scenes have said that John Constantine WILL be a full-time member of the Legends next season…IF the show gets renewed. So…fingers crossed!

Anyway, “Necromancing The Stone” almost literally picked up where “Amazing Grace” left off last week. The cracks in time are spreading, and the Legends need to work harder and faster in order to prevent Mallous from returning. But, when Sara is tricked into taking the Death Totem, things go full-on horror movie.

Sara gets possessed, and begins taking out EVERYONE one at a time. In quite scary fashion might I add. What really sold this wasn’t just the fact that we knew that Mallous had a piece of himself inside of Sara, but Sara as a character is someone that likely would have a connection with the Death Totem, and they used her history to great effect. Even showing a scene of her as part of the League of Assassins, and killing another member for wanting to leave without Ra’s permission. Death is a part of Sara’s life, and now she’s finally accepting that.

I also liked how this episode really showed the connection and love that Sara and Ava have for each other. Yes, some people don’t like this one, but it’s (in my opinion) just as pure as the one between Sara and Nyssa from Arrow. And that connection played dividends in multiple scenes.

For example, when Sara was possessed by a demon from beyond time, who else would you call but John bloody Constantine? Exactly!!!

Matt Ryan continues to excel as the warlock with a dark history all his own. One minute he’s charming, the next he’s infuriating, the next he’s consoling, he knows how to play all the right beats, and it’s awesome. I REALLY hope that Season 04 happens so that he can be a regular in a series again.

The scenes with Constantine, Ava and Gary were to die for…ok…poor choice of words, but the intent is there. They were high comedy, and Gary actually got to save the day in a way. Go Gary!

Another cool moment was when Mick got to wield the Fire Totem. I hope there’s some more context as to what he can do and how he feels about the power he now has.

Now, there were a few downpoints here. First, it’s slightly addressed, but it’s confusing why Mallous tried to trick people with their “darkest secrets” when he clearly had the power to stop all of them with his/her bare hands. And in the case of Nate, he didn’t even fight back against his grandfather. Also, although I have no doubt this will change, I hated having to watch Sara and Ava break up. It’s very CW, which is why it’s frustrating.

Still, “Necromancing The Stone” was a great episode, and it pushed certain things forward as we get closer to the season finale.
