Borrowing1

So far this season, Flash has had a very big consistency problem. Whether it was making Savitar and Dr. Alchemy reasonable villains, to the new addition of Julian, to the growing annoyance of Wally, and of course, the Flashpoint consequences, Flash was very up and down. And in the midseason finale, we got something that we knew wouldn’t happen as the cliffhanger: Iris dying.

However, in “Borrowing Problems From The Future”, a very interesting new dynamic was created, all the while setting up the future of the season with some big twists in store no doubt.

First up, I like that Barry didn’t wait too long to tell Iris about her “fate”, and then, after confiding in the others, they “vibed” to the future, and got more details on what’s to come. There were some fun Easter Eggs here, including the arrival of the Music Meister, Gorilla Grodd (and friends) coming, and more. Through these news events, they now have a way to try and prevent Iris from dying. It’s an interesting idea, and definitely makes for a far more interesting situation than we had before. Whether it all works out well is still up in the air, but for now, it’s encouraging.

Also nice, was that Kid Flash was getting some time in the spotlight as Barry’s partner/sidekick. I liked how he was tagging along at first, and then moved up (with Barry’s permission) to full on crimefighter. I also am glad we got to see Barry’s brain at work in the fire situation. Again, Barry is brilliant, and sometimes it gets downplayed because of his speed powers, I’m glad to see they haven’t forgotten that.

An interesting dynamic emerged with Julian and Caitlin, I’m glad these two are becoming friends, and it actually makes sense for Julian to be a part of Team Flash after everything that happened with Savitar. And as Caitlin noted, only they can support him. Now it will remain to be seen how effective he can be, but hey, let’s give him a chance, right?

Which of course brings us to HR. Who was in the midst of opening his Star Labs museum. While there are some big questions here (like, how is he funding this? And is money going to be the reason it potentially closes down in the future?), it was an interesting thing to see him try and get something “real” from his life. And I’m glad Cisco finally warmed up to him and made it so that the museum could actually work.

Now yes, there were some bad parts here. Plunder, while having a cool gun for sure, seemed like a bad Slade/Captain Cold merger ripoff. But, he did serve a purpose I suppose. And as for the new captain, who was he to judge Wally based on one appearance? Especially since during the whole time, the guy was pinned in a fire! Be grateful!

All in all though, “Borrowing Problems From The Future” did a great job of trying to get Flash Season 03 back on track. I’m now VERY invested in it, and hope this second half is better than the first one.
