WATCH: New Rick and Morty short seems to confirm the duo’s long-suspected relationship to each other

August 14th, 2020 by Marc Comments

All Rick & Morty fans – well, most – probably know the long-held theory that the duo are actually the same person, that Rick is an older version of Morty.

And now Adult Swim seem to have confirmed it. Sort of.

Deen Digital’s Rick and Morty vs Genocider short – which you can watch below first if you don’t want it spoiled – sees Rick-C-137 (the prime Rick, if you will) – hunted by Evil Morty and the Citadel of Ricks or, as they’re called here, the Genociders. The hunt goes far and wide with many peaks and throughs,  but near the end Rick gives Morty  a potion to turn him into a ‘Rip Van Winkle’ and then Rick calls Morty ‘Rick Sanchez’ which is, of course, Rick’s name. There’s also a scene where Rick and Morty’s faces overlap in a reflection, seeming to hint at something bigger.

Yes, it seems to be hinting that the two are one and the same.

At the end Morty’s dad, Jerry, calls Rick about the birth of Morty and and Rick takes a swig out of the jug Morty’s potion was in. It’s not subtle but it typically great.

However, there’s an argument to be made that because this is a shirt rather than the main series, it’s not canon, however, as Unilad points out, co-creator Justin Roiland once said ‘technically everything is canon in an infinite multiverse’.

This means the short could be canon. But might not be.

Ugh.

Look, the creators and writers likely know the truth of these things and they also likely know that events like this just drive the fandom up the wall. And they likely know we – as they do – love it.

So, what do you think? Are Rick and Morty one and the same? Sound off in all the usual ways, gang.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
