WATCH: Tom Welling confirms Smallville animated series development; original cast set to return

June 24th, 2021 by Marc Comments

We have reported before that Smallville stars Tom welling (Clark Kent) and Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor) have been trying to get an animated follow-up to the hit Superman series up and running for a while now (here) and now Welling himself has confirmed it is being worked on and he has high hopes for it.

In a new cameo appearance, below, the star confirms that he and Rosenbaum are developing the series and hoping to get most – no explanation on this one needed *cough* Allison Mack *cough* – of the original cast back to give us more of the show’s massive DC universe.

“Michael Rosenbaum and I are actually working on an animated series to bring those characters back to life and use as many of the original cast members as possible,” Welling said, “Don’t tell anybody, though. It’s a secret. We’re still working on it.”

The series was a big hit in the 2000s and, arguably, kicked off what we now call the Arrowverse, with Welling and the show’s Lois Lane, played by Erica Durance, even returning for an appearance on last year’s Crisis on Infinite Earths event on The CW (below), and the show continues to be a fan favourite and frequently comes on lists of shows we wish could be continued.

And now, almost 20 years on, it looks like we will finally see Welling’s Clark Kent finally putting on the iconic suit as he never did in the show itself (see?), despite getting up to superheroics for ten years as well as joining their version of the Justice League.

Now, this isn’t the first time the show continued on from its ten season run as there was a successful – and now hard to track down – comic series called Smallville Season 11 which even saw Batman introduced (here). If you’re interested, it’s been converted into a five-hour video that you can watch here.

Personally, I was a pretty big fan of the show back in the day and I loved seeing welling return for Crisis, so the idea of a sequel series, even in animated form, has me pretty excited as it’s a show that still has a very loyal fanbase to this day and I’m confident that, show the show make it to HBO Max, it would be a big success.

What say you all? Would this be something you’d be excited to see?

Let me know.

He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife.
