When Supergirl made the jump from ABC to The CW earlier this season, it was obvious they needed to open big and so Tyler Hoechlin was called in to star in the first couple of episodes as Superman (above).
And he was pretty darned good in the role. However, when he flew back to Metropolis it was pretty much understood that he wouldn’t be back anytime soon; although the fans liked his take on the Man of Steel very, very much.
So much so that many have been asking i maybe we’ll see a Superman series on The CW.
Now he president of The CW, Mark Pedowitz, has addressed the idea at the Television Critics Association’s press tour and, while it’s not good, it’s not terrible either: “Tyler did a great job,” he said.
“There’s no plan to do a series. There are no plans at the moment for him to return [to Supergirl]. If they wish to have him return, we’d love to have him.”
Asked if there was a rights issue or any reason DC didn’t want Superman to have a new series, he added: “I can’t even answer the question yet because at this time there are no plans to do it and there have been no discussions about it.”
Showrunner Greg Berlanti chipped in: “Look, we were just really lucky,” he explained. “We asked to have him come on for the first couple episodes and they were great about it. We’d love to have Tyler back, he’s amazing, he was great in the role. In success, I think all those things are possible. I’m always the guy who says ‘yes’ if there seems to be an appetite for it and the people involved are really nice.”
Man, we loved Tyler’s take on Superman who felt like a return to the fun and innocence of Reeve and Routh but with Smallville still fresh in our minds, we can live without a Superman show for another while…
