After the disaster that was The Dark Tower movie last year we kinda thought the idea of another adventure into Mid-World was likely a long way off.
Then creator Stephen King teased that the Tower story could find itself heading to the small screen ala Lord of The Rings at Amazon and Game of Thrones on HBO (here).
Then when, as mentioned above, Amazon announced the Lord of the Rings show we heard whispers that we may be getting a Dark Tower series from them too.
And it looks like we are! Yes!
According to That Hashtag Show Amazon are getting ready to move forward to with the series of 13 one-hour episodes in the first series with The Walking Dead’s Glen Mazzara and Titans’ Akiva Goldsman executive producing with King himself.
This is great news.
Word is they wanted to wait until the movie was well in the past to move forward with the project so people will know it’s nothing to do with it.
Here’s the report:
The series will of course focus on Roland Deschain, a young boy from a long line of “gunslingers”, and his “ka-tet” comprised of Cuthbert Allgood, Alain Johns, Ileen Ritter and Jamie De Curry in addition to his girlfriend, Susan Delgado. The studio is currently looking at actors and actresses, ages 16-18 for all the roles listed above.
Marten Broadcloak will serve as the series antagonist and his affair with Roland’s mother, Gabrielle, will factor heavily into the plot. Her affair incites Roland to pick up his guns in a search for Broadcloak and sets his father, Steven, on a mission to find him. At this time, no offers have been made to talent, but the cast should begin to assemble quickly.
This is very interesting because it’s clearly based around the fourth book in King’s iconic series, Wizard and Glass (with maybe some of the seventh book The Wind Through the Keyhole) as this is the story of young Roland and the events in his life that will someday lead to him becoming The Gunslinger we know and love.
It’s also a smart move because it will introduce a different take on Roland than the one the movie tried to do and it will tell us chronologically the first adventure of Roland and his Ka-tet. It is also very much a standalone tale, so if the series doesn’t go beyond the first season then it should make a cool little series to stand alone.
Honestly, this is such exciting news… we can’t wait to see the world of Gilead come together again. And maybe this time done right.
