Stephen King says The Dark Tower TV series is now planned as a full reboot!

Ok, so we’ve all made our peace with the fact that The Dark Tower, while not a terrible movie in itself, was an atrocious and disrespectful adaptation of Stephen King’s eight book masterpiece.

And we made our peace with the fact that, even though a TV series was planned to tell the story of Roland of Gilead (Idris Elba) as a younger man (here) it was probably never going to see the light of day given the movie’s poor reception.

However, now King himself has given us a very enticing line to grab hold of….

Last we heard The Walking Dead’s showrunner between 2011 and 2013 Glen Mazzara was set to be the showrunner (see the link above). However, King has addressed (some of) the problems with the movie and why it fails: “The major challenge was to do a film based on a series of books that’s really long, about 3,000 pages.

“The other part of it was the decision to do a PG-13 feature adaptation of books that are extremely violent and deal with violent behavior in a fairly graphic way. That was something that had to be overcome, although I’ve gotta say, I thought [screenwriter] Akiva Goldsman did a terrific job in taking a central part of the book and turning it into what I thought was a pretty good movie.”

Ok, fair enough, King was always supportive of the movie (although we always felt it was a little… insincere) but then he goes on to say something very, very exciting:

“The TV series they’re developing now … we’ll see what happens with that… It would be like a complete reboot, so we’ll just have to see.”

What?!

Yes! Could you imagine a Game of Thrones type series based around the world of The Dark Tower? It’s how fans – including myself, a life-long fan – have always believed the tale should be treated.

So far, of course, King seems to be letting us know not to get too excited… but dammit, we can’t help it!

Bring it on, we say!

Now, has anyone got HBO’s phone number?

Thoughts?
