A couple of odd little horror movies I really enjoyed were the Happy Death Day movies, which took slasher horrors in a very different direction.
Infusing Scream with Groundhog Day, the movies were directed by Christopher Landon and features Jessica Rothe as the wonderfully named Tree Gelbman who is being stalked and killed by a masked killer but every time he gets her, she wakes up again on the morning of death and it’s a really fun concept for a movie series.
However, the second movie ends with a wide-open story still needing to be resolved and while it was all looking great a few years back, it’s become less and less likely that that third movie was coming, which is a real shame.
Now Rothe, currently promoting the bonkers Boy Kills World, has spoken about the third movie and, more importantly, if it will happen.
“Well, I can say Chris Landon has the whole thing figured out. We just need to wait for Blumhouse and Universal to get their ducks in a row. But my fingers are so crossed. I think Tree [Gelbman] deserves her third and final chapter to bring that incredible character and franchise to a close or a new beginning.”
this is a positive comment given that last January Landon seemed very bummed, saying he didn’t think the movie was ever going to happen, saying: “There was a tiny moment where I really felt like I had Universal’s attention, but they forgot about me. I think it’s a really tough one for them, and I’m being really blunt and honest in that the first movie was very successful. It made a lot of money. It was well-received. And the sequel was not.
“The sequel is loved by people who have seen it, but it did not make a lot of money, and it was not a success for them. So it’s very hard to motivate them to make a third movie when the last one just didn’t perform. Those are the hard economics of the business.”
With Totally Killer and Freaky borrowing the sci-fi silliness from the Happy Death Day movies and both being well received, I think it would be a real shame if, as Rothe says, Tree didn’t get to finish her story.
Have you seen the Happy Death Day movies? Did you like them? Would you show up for a third? Let me know…
