After months of teasing, the WWE has announced that Arrow star Stephen Amell will be a part of the Summer Slam pay-per-view on August 23rd where he will team with Neville against Stardust and King Barrett.
The feud first began when Amell, a self-confessed wrestling fan, attended WWE Raw on May 26th this year and Stardust (Cody Rhodes) had a confrontation with the actor who was in the crowd, upon his entrance to the ring. Since this incident the two have traded insults and jibes on Twitter which many thought this would lead to a match.
Plans seemed to be derailed however when Stardust’s dad (wrestling legend Dusty Rhodes) passed away in real life and the superstar took some bereavement leave. Last night however, Amell again appeared as a special guest on Raw where another incident happened.
The WWE and Amell have really played this up as a superhero v super-villain battle what with Amell’s ties to the DC comics universe playing Green Arrow on TV and Cody Rhode’s Stardust persona complete with Joker style face-paint and villainous actions. They’ve even added Neville who in recent months as been portrayed as a superhero character on their programming to the tag match on Amell’s side. In a nice piece of symmetry, Neville’s own finishing move is called ‘Red Arrow’, nicely done WWE!
As a huge wrestling and comic book fan I’m really looking forward to this lock-up!
