Aquaman director James Wan has been discussing the upcoming movie and his personal role within the DC Extended Universe.
Firstly, he has announced that Aquaman will potentially feature multiple villains. In an interview with CinemaBlend, Wan teases that he has more than one bad guy lined up to take on the king of Atlantis:
“I gotta say, one thing I love about the Aquaman world is all the really different, really interesting characters. They are interesting characters, including the villains – I’m not going to tell you which villains I’m going to play with! [laughs] But they’re super cool. They’re very larger than life, but they’re unique.”
It may be that he has his eye on future sequels, which is preferable. The last thing we want in Aquaman’s first outing is villain fatigue, but we’ll have to wait and see.
Wan has also mentioned that he was offered a different DC superhero project. In another interview with Uproxx, Wan mentioned that Warners had offered him the opportunity to helm a Flash movie:
“It was, well, oh jeez, this would be a big tidbit: They asked me which of the two characters I’d be interested in and it was between The Flash and Aquaman. This is how I weighed it: For me, we’ve seen various versions of the Flash…There’s a popular show on TV and there was a great one in the ‘90s. I loved that Flash! But the thing that ultimately pushed me more towards Aquaman is I love the possibility of creating a whole new world. I’ve always wanted to do a world creation story and visually create this amazing, incredible, magical kingdom. And also, I love the fact that Aquaman is an underdog character. I love the fact that people like to make fun of him. [Laughs.] I feel the bar is a lot lower and I can have fun with him!”
The issue of the “bar being lower” no doubt refers to Aquaman’s image in the public mind of being utterly useless, first (probably inadvertently) created with 70s cartoon Super Friends and since reinforced in numerous Family Guy skits. Here’s hoping that Wan will give Arthur his time to shine.
Aquaman is slated for release on 27 July 2018.
