Bay returning? No GI Joe crossover? What is happening to the Transformers movies?

It looks like the future of Transformers on the big screen is all over the place and a bit of a mess which, if you’ve tried to keep up with the live-action movies so far, shouldn’t be a shock to you.

So, the last time we saw the Transformers on the big screen was in 2023’s Rise of the Beasts and while the movie was fine, it set up a much larger world when we saw Anthony Ramos’ Noah Diaz being brought into the fold of a top secret military organisation called… GI Joe.

Yes, after all these years, the two action franchises were finally set to meet on the big screen.

But that was then.

James Cameron says there’s a plan for two more Alita: Battle Angel movies

And now that Paramount and Skydance have merged, things aren’t as clear as they were just two short years ago,

“I don’t know, brother. I feel like you guys find out before us… There’s a lot going on at Paramount, Skydance,” Ramos said when asked about the crossover.

“The whole thing going on, the whole Skydance going on over there. So hopefully we’ll figure it out soon.”

Fast and Furious star Tyrese Gibson teases he may return to the Transformers franchise now: “I was just on the phone with Michael Bay last week… so that’s all I can tell you.”

Add to this the fact that word is that Michael Bay, who directed the first five Transformers live-action movies between 2007 and 2017, is in talks to return.

Would Bay’s return mean that the Transformers/GI Joe crossover is finished? Or would we see two separate universes? Would Bay’s movie merge all the movies? Man, this is all very confusing.

Add into the mix that the really rather great animated Transformers One, which came out last year, has reportedly had its sequel pulled and we’ve also recently learned that the rather brilliant Energon Universe comic books, featuring both Transformers and GI Joe, are hoping to get an animated series order and the whole Transformers universe really does seem to be tripping over itself.

I have always felt that while a lot of the Transformers movies were entertaining, the whole universe needs a unifying hand… there’s no reason why we can’t have live-action and animated movies along with animated shows all existing in the same universe. That’s how I would do Transformers, the same way Kevin Feige handled Marvel and James Gunn and Peter Safran are handling DC.

But, for the record, my advice would be to adapt the Energon Universe comics on the big screen… that would really be the ticket.

Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
