January 14th, 2026 by Marc Comments

Big news today from James Gunn as he just announced that the Mr Miracle animated show would not be standalone or Elseworlds but would be part of the wider DCU.

Celebrating Mr Miracle’s first-ever appearance 55 years ago, Gunn took to social media to break the news of the character’s joining the DC Universe:

The world’s greatest escape artist made his debut on this day 55 years ago in 1971! Happy anniversary to Mister Miracle, who debuted in MISTER MIRACLE #1, written by Marv Wolfman and Jack Kirby, with pencils by Jack Kirby and inks by Vince Colletta. Soon be seen in our DCU animated show, based on the 12-issue comic book series from Tom King.

James Gunn announces who will play the DCU’s Brainiac UPDATED

Not only is the series part of the DCU, but it’s going to bring in Darkseid, the Superman villain who was set up to the scourge of Zack Snyder’s DC cinematic universe. Being downgraded to a villain in an animated show is quite a thing for Darkseid.

The show’s official synopsis reads:

The new series follows Scott Free, the world’s greatest escape artist, known to the world as Mister Miracle, whose perfect life with his warrior wife Big Barda falls apart when their two home worlds — Apocalypse and New Genesis — go to war and Scott’s cruel adoptive father Darkseid appears to have captured the ultimate weapon, the Anti-Life Equation, that will give him total dominance over the universe.

As the mountains of bodies on both sides grow ever higher, only Mister Miracle can stop the slaughter and restore peace. But the terrible power of the Anti-Life Equation may already be at work in his own mind, warping his reality, exposing his long-buried pain, and shattering the fragile happiness he’s found with the woman he loves.

Tidbit:

Many, myself included, believed that the Mr Miracle series was set in the same universe as the My Adventures with Superman series, which is in its own universe and has a third season now in production.
This series itself already has a companion show coming, with My Adventures with Green Lantern set for later this year.
We know that there is also a DC Super Powers and a Starfire! series in production, but it’s not clear yet which universes they belong to.

In the comics, Mister Miracle is a New God who was raised in the pits of Apokolips, home of Darkseid. While there, he met his wife, Big Barda, former leader of the Furies, and they escaped from their hellish home to Earth, where Mister Miracle took the name Scott Free (geddit?), Earth’s greatest escape artist, who also fights cosmic enemies as one of DC’s strongest but most underestimated heroes.

When the show was first announced, we learned that it is aimed at adult fans and is based on Tom King’s 12-issue Eisner Award-winning comic; King is also the showrunner on the series.

This is the second adult-oriented animated show from Gunn’s DCU, with Creature Commandos season one, left, hitting screens last year. Gunn has revealed that season 2 is written and is currently being animated.

The Mister Miracle series has no release date yet but promises to be a “harrowing, hilarious, heart-wrenching journey across the pitfalls of the ordinary and extraordinary as the son of God raised by the devil tries to save his family, his world, and maybe even himself.”

Since we don’t even have as much as a screenshot from the series yet, I would have to imagine that we might be getting a good look at the series from Gunn soon.

Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
