Game of Thrones officially set for the big-screen and the stage

It looks like Game of Thrones is officially expanding and not just on the small screen, as two major projects are now confirmed as happening, one on the big screen and one on the stage.

At Warner Bros’ CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas, it was officially announced that a big-screen adventure, currently dubbed Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, was set for the IP’s ‘2027 and beyond’ slate.

The movie will follow conqueror Aegon I Targaryen, whose story was told in creator George RR Martin’s Fire and Blood novel, and told the story of Aegon the First, who was the first to unite the kingdoms of Westeros under one ruler; he was the one who made the titular Iron Throne from the swords of his fallen enemies and ruled with, in typical Game of Thrones fashion, his two sister-wives and queens, Visenya and Rhaenys.

It certainly could be a colourful big-screen debut for the franchise. As of now, the movie will be penned by House of Cards showrunner and Andor writer Beau Willimon.

But, as well as that, it seems that the Game of Thrones lore is set to expand, a la Harry Potter and Stranger Things, on the stage.

Opening on July 20th at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, Game of Thrones: The Mad King will act as a prequel to the main Game of Thrones series and will centre on a tournament at Harrenhal and Robert’s Rebellion. It will also introduce Ned Stark’s brother Brandon, who has never been seen in live-action. It will also feature Ned Stark, Lyanna Stark, Brandon Stark, Robert Baratheon, Jamie Lannister, and Varys

The Mad King will be directed by Dominic Cooke and written by Duncan Macmillan.

At this point in Westeros history, the Mad King Aerys II is in charge, but a plot is brewing in the shadows to take him out, which will be a big focus of the play, as will Lyanna’s tryst with the Mad King’s son, Rhaegar Targaryen, even though an agreement has already been reached for her to marry Robert Baratheon.

The Royal Shakespeare Theatre’s co-artistic directors, Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey, said in a statement that The Mad King will reconfigure the layout of the theatre itself and “audiences will find themselves at the very heart of the action—immersed in the intrigue and theatrical spectacle that promises to make this production truly epic. It’s an ambitious and exhilarating collaboration, and we can’t wait to welcome audiences into this extraordinary experience.”

Game of Thrones is branching out in a big way.

Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
