Gatwa and Gibson unsure of future in Doctor Who beyond 2025

January 7th, 2024 by Marc Comments

With Doctor Who making a strong – if far from perfect – return in December, we learned that new fifteenth Doctor Ncuti Gatwa is already working on two full series of the show along with new companion Rubie Sunday, played by Millie Gibson.

But it seems that may be as far as this Doctor’s tenure goes if comments by the duo are to be read into.

Gatwa and Gibson made a strong first impression on Christmas Day with the episode The Church on Ruby Rose that was a lot of fun and definitely gave a flavor for the show’s new incarnation but after two series, we might be getting ready for yet another regeneration for out favorite Time Lord.

While the second series is currently filming, ensuring we’ll have them in the TARDIS until the end of 2025, the duo are cagey about their future beyond that.

Speaking to Rolling Stone last year, Gatwa said he’s looking forward to getting back to theatre work in 2024, saying it “kept me warm and it held me all night, even if I was broke. But I’m planning on getting back to it [in 2024], after I finish season two of Doctor Who.”

The star also told the Radio Times just before his debut in December that after the second series finished, he had “No idea, no plan”.

Now, adding to the uncertainty, Gibson, in a recent discussion with Fabric Magazine said that in 2014 she would “probably be auditioning again for parts and seeing what’s out there”.

She added: “It’s hard to think what might come next… I’m just excited to see what’s to come.”

It certainly seems like the pair are making new plans.

Now, certain corners of YouTube are implying that this is because of the show’s poor reception over the festive period and, yes, while it wasn’t as great as it was back in the days of Tennant or Smith, it certainly seemed to show that the series is still alive and well… despite some poor writing; they want to imply that the new Doctor and companion are being fired or removed when it’s possibly just the case that showrunner Russell T Davies only wants them around for two years or perhaps they simply haven’t decided what comes next and, in the case of Gibson in particular, it’s not unheard of for a Doctor to have more than one companion during his travels.

Or, even more likely, they were waiting to see who the show was received on its return before committing beyond the two years.

I, personally, thought some of the Doctor’s return was pretty bad – especially the first of the 60th Anniversary specials – but overall, I felt it got better with each installment and Gatwa’s Doctor has a lot of infectious fun and energy, so he could have a bright future ahead of him traveling though time and space.

But hey, it’s Doctor Who, so the future is always in flux…
