John Wesley Shipp’s role on The CW’s Flash revealed

May 28th, 2014 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

Ever since John Wesley Shipp was cast in The Flash series, most fan have basically assumed he was Barry Allen’s dad. After all the actor played Barry Allen/The Flash in CBS’ short-lived ’90s show.

If you watched The Flash trailer, it made it even more obvious like in the photo below.

But now it’s official as Executive producer Greg Berlanti tells TV Line:

“Given his history with The Flash, [executive producers] Andrew [Kreisberg], Geoff [Johns] and I could only think of one person we wanted to play Barry’s father and that was John Wesley Shipp. He gives a fantastic and emotional performance in the pilot and we are looking forward to his presence in many more episodes. Also, personally, it was just wonderful to work with him again since my days at Dawson’s Creek. He’s a great actor and a great guy.”

In the series Barry Allen’s father is wrongly accused of killing his wife Nora (Michelle Harrison). His son, Barry, knows that isn’t the case as he witnessed the event and knows someone with some super abilities is responsible. The burden to prove his father’s innocence will fall on Barry.

After a particle accelerator causes a freak storm, CSI Investigator Barry Allen is struck by lightning and falls into a coma. Months later he awakens with the power of super speed, granting him the ability to move through Central City like an unseen guardian angel. Though initially excited by his newfound powers, Barry is shocked to discover he is not the only “meta-human” who was created in the wake of the accelerator explosion — and not everyone is using their new powers for good. Barry partners with S.T.A.R. Labs and dedicates his life to protect the innocent. For now, only a few close friends and associates know that Barry is literally the fastest man alive, but it won’t be long before the world learns what Barry Allen has become…The Flash.

The cast of the Flash show includes Grant Gustin as Barry Allen, Candice Patton as Iris West, Jesse L. Martin as Iris’s father, Detective West, Rick Gosnett as Central City Police Detective Eddie Thawne aka Professor Zoom/Reverse Flash, Carlos Valdes as Cisco Ramon aka Vibe, Danielle Panabaker as S.T.A.R. Labs bioengineer Caitlin Snow aka Killer Frost, Tom Cavanagh as S.T.A.R. Labs CEO Harrison Wells, Michelle Harrison as Nora Allen, and John Wesley Shipp as Henry Allen.

The Flash arrives from co-creators Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg who, along with Geoff Johns, will write the pilot episode with Arrow pilot director David Nutter at the helm.

The Flash will air on Tuesdays this fall on The CW at 8pm EST.
