True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto is believed to be eyeing Robert Downey Jnr for a planned Perry Mason mini series on HBO.

According to Variety, Pizzolatto is writing the treatment, while Downey will star. Plot details are scarce, but insiders say the project is based on Downey Jnr’s ‘Perry Mason’ reboot, which he had been developing as a feature film at Warner Bros. for several years.

Pizzolatto, meanwhile, has an overall deal with HBO that lasts until 2018. The second season of True Detective was a bit of a disappointment for fans after the success of season one so this will maybe help rejuvenate him for a more interesting third season if Perry Mason is a success.

Perry Mason is a criminal defense lawyer in the works of detective fiction written by Erle Stanley Gardner.
