Largest meteor ever to hit Antarctica discovered

March 12th, 2013 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

Scientists have discovered the biggest meteor ever to hit Antarctica. Most meteors burn up leaving very little, however a Belgium research team have revealed the 40 pound meteor is the biggest they have ever found there in 25 years and will give them a great insight into how the solar system was formed.

It was found in the Nansen Ice Field as part of a total haul of 425 rocks weighing 75 kilogrammes.

Its discovery has left the Princess Elizabeth Antarctic research base very excited. Vinciane Debaille, a Belgium scientist that led the team, said that such a find is rare and is invaluable to them and their research.

In the wake of the Russian meteor crash, we are one step closer to the stars.
