‘A lot of work’ being done on developing Donnie Darko follow-up says creator Richard Kelly

Ooooooh… exciting news from the world of Donnie Darko today as it seems there may be more adventures to be had in that universe.

The original movie, which starred Jake Gyllenhaal as a teen on a doomed path who is being told about the world’s end by a man in a scary rabbit suit is, apart from superb, an absolute classic and now writer/director Richard Kelly has teased that he’s not done in the Darko sandbox.

And no, we don’t count S. Darko… we don’t even talk about that disaster of a straight-to-video sequel.

Kelly spoke about making a sequel/follow-up a few years ago (here) and now it seems he’s been doing a lot of prep work and is hopeful that he’ll get to play with the story on screen again: “Well, I’m probably not allowed to say anything more than there has been an enormous amount of work completed,” Kelly says.

“I’m hopeful that we might get to explore that world in a very big and exciting way. But we’ll see what happens. But there has been a lot of work done. A lot of work has been done.”

So… a lot of work? Are we talking a movie? A trilogy? Maybe a series? Whatever it is, you can argue Kelly’s track record post-Donnie has been, well, mixed, but having him back in THAT world? Oh, yes please.

On top of this, Kelly is currently prepping an autobiographical look at the life of Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling, based on Serling’s daughter Anne’s book As I Knew Him: My Dad, Rod Serling.

“Well, that is a very special project,” he says.

“There is a big fantasy science fiction concept in the sort of approach that we’re taking to try and tell the story of his life. So, that’s a really complicated, difficult needle to thread. We are definitely working on it and hopefully at some point, we’ll get that project off the ground and it’s really just about getting all of the elements to work. So fingers crossed that we’ll get there and we can really pay a tribute to Rod’s life in the best possible way.”

Looks like Kelly could be set to make a big comeback and we’re always optimistic about such things.

What about you all? Let me know our thoughts, guys.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
