In a surprising bit of news, it seems that Amazon has bought MGM Studios for a whopping $8.45bn including all their franchises and properties, including the world’s favourite superspy, James Bond.
However, while the most recent movie, No Time To Die, has been delayed several times since last year and is set to be released this October 8th, we will not be seeing it on Amazon Prime any time soon.
Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson are fighting to ensure that Bond stays on the big screen, where he belongs: “We are committed to continuing to make James Bond films for the worldwide theatrical audience,” the two said in a new statement on the deal.
Broccoli said they are still the custodians of James Bond and that they “take that responsibility seriously”.
How exactly this all plays out in the future is anyone’s guess, but I, for one, want my Bond in the cinema… but I’d not be against Amazon developing a Bond universe with other characters, villains and adventures.
