Some bad news tonight for fans of Sony’s Spider-verse movies (isn’t that everyone?) as the third movie, Beyond the Spider-verse, which was originally penciled in to release in March this year, is now looking like it’s releasing in 2026 at the earliest!
A new report from Deadline has reported that Sony is “taking a lot of tender loving care with the next Spider-Verse animated movie, with no plans for that threequel to hit the 2025 release calendar,” this is very likely riding on the back of the news that Sony’s live-action Spider-man (without Spider-man) movies are, at least for now, dead and buried after Kraven the Hunter limps out of cinemas.
The news comes not long after scooper Brandon Davis reported that the movie was facing a lot of issues at Sony and was a long way off.
Lord and Miller say Spider-man: Beyond the Spider-verse will only be released when it’s ready
Davis said: “I know that that movie is very, very far off. I don’t know if it’s being animated yet. I know they restarted the script after Across The Spider-Verse came out. They didn’t have the ending – at least not agreed upon.”
This makes a lot of sense after Christopher Lord and Phil Miller, the men behind the Spider-verse movies (and the currently filming Spider-man: Noir series with Nicolas Cage), left Sony very suddenly, leaving behind a deal that would have basically seen them overseeing Marvel content at the studio.
The first two Spider-verse movies are utterly exceptional, so the third movie, if it maintains that standard, will be well worth the wait – and wait we all will – but if this is all true and Sony are in charge of the movie, then I can’t help but get a worrisome chill up my spine.
What do you all think? Let me know, guys…
