Back in February a small movie you might have heard of was released called Black Panther and is it still going strong; so strong in fact it has recently become Marvel’s highest grossing film ever at the US box office with a total of $681 Million, and world wide it is only $70 million away from Age of Ultron to secure the number two spot behind the original Avengers movie
To say that Black Panther is exceeding expectations would be an understatement and it is now a question of when, not if, Marvel will make the sequel.
When asked about a sequel and specifically if Ryan Coogler will be back to direct by Collider, the president of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige said: “We definitely want Ryan to come back and that’s actively being worked out right now. When will it be? A lot of it will be when Ryan wants to and not rushing anything, but I think we have an idea of when it will be. But, again, [we’re] not going to announce any post-Avengers 4 movies until hopefully after Avengers 4, which is another reason we’re not going to Comic-Con.”
When asked about the success of Black Panther Feige said: “The success of Panther is so amazing and makes us happy for so many reasons, and it certainly exceeded our lofty expectations. But our expectations were always lofty, so we had built a plan, not the least of which was centering so much of Infinity War in those locations and with some of those characters, that [its success] just says, ‘Let’s stick to this plan.’
“It would have bee much more disruptive if it had not worked. Then we would have had to change a lot of what we were thinking about, but it really just solidifies and excites us to continue to move forward in the directions we’re heading in.”
So there we have it, final proof that the lack of news about what is going to happen post Avengers 4 is part of the long term plan that Marvel has for the MCU in phase 4, while at the same time keeping spoilers abut the future of characters to a minimum, we all know that people are gonna die in the next Avengers movies and holding back the slate of movies to follow keeps us guessing what fate awaits our favourites and keeps Marvel’s options open on what characters they are going to use going forward the only thing we know for sure is that Spider-Man will be getting at least two more MCU movies.
It’s this kind of long term planning that helped create the MCU and it is this that means that we will hopefully be seeing a 20th anniversary spectacular in 2028 – take note WB and DC.
