Brandon James’ Ghostface mask from MTV series found in Scream VI

September 9th, 2023 by Marc Comments

So, up until now, we’ve always assumed that the hit Scream movies and the MTV Scream series, despite borrowing elements from the movies, were separate entities but now it seems that in Scream VI the two worlds collide… sort of.

MTV’s Scream series, according to MTV themselves, is ‘inspired by the Wes Craven film that turned the slasher genre on its decapitated head, this anthology horror series continues to hack apart tropes and subvert expectations as new groups of teens find themselves the target of masked killers’.

Instead of the familiar Ghostface mask from the movies, the series features a mask based on in-universe disfigured killer Brandon James, left, which bears some resemblance to the movie look but (thanks to copyright and all that good stuff) is significantly different.

Until the third season when the movie mask was used but that series seems to be mostly not spoken about as it was, well, bad.

However, now Youtuber Beyond the Mask, who focuses primarily on the Scream series has found the Brandon James mask in Scream VI.

Yes, the mask makes a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance on the train scene when the core characters are on a Halloween train full of familiar monsters and killers such as Pinhead, Freddy Kruger, Jason Vorhees and… Ghostface MkII.

Ready or Not writer keen to revisit that world

The script of the movie, according to Beyond the Mask, says the following:

…. The car is packed to the max with Halloween revelers dressed as every goddamn horror movie ghoul you can imagine: Freddy. Jason. Pinhead. Michael  Myers. Leatherface and more than a few Ghostfaces, most in the traditional mask, a couple in the chrome mask from Stab 8, one’s even wearing the mask from the Scream TV series.

And here he is:

So what does this mean? Why is the world of the Scream movies aware of Brandon James? Is he a killer in that world? Well, maybe…

If the Scream universe is aware of Freddy Kruger, Pinhead and all the others, then is James as big a monster celeb? If you look at the image above, you’ll see the Bride from Ready of Not, also directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett who directed Scream (V) and Scream VI, played in that movie by Samara Weaving who, quite meta as it is, also appeared in Scream VI, so what does that mean?

Well, nothing.

I don’t think there’s anything to it beyond a fun little nod to the fans, I don’t think Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett are trying to tell us this puts the TV show in the same reality, I think they’re just hoping if anyone notices it, they’ll think it’s a cool Easter egg.

Or am I wrong? Let me know.

Thoughts? I know you have them! Voice-off in the usual ways on FTN’s FacebookTwitter and Instagram
