There was so much footage shot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens that some of it simply had to be cut. That’s the way production processes go. Scenes are cut, character’s are reduced in order to structure and package the film correctly. It just happens. However, in the case of Captain Phasma and Unkar Plutt, that was costly for the impact of their characters.

The Oscar-nominated editing duo of Mary Jo Markey and Maryann Brandon recently revealed to The Hollywood Reporter (via Squareeyed) that there was originally going to be more from Phasma and Plutt, but they ultimately had to be cut.

Markey started it off revealing that there was supposed to be more of Captain Phasma. She said: “There was actually a fun thing with Captain Phasma ordering all of the ships into the air, but they didn’t realize that Han and Finn had just thrown her down a garbage chute.”

Given how much hype there was surrounding the chrome-plated Captain Phasma, played byGame of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie, many fans were let down by how little the character is actually in the film.

Though this snippet that was cut doesn’t sound like a major sequence, it does indicate that, at one point, her character was a more significant presence. However, Lucasfilm has confirmed that they intend to make more use of her character and she’ll play a bigger role in the upcoming Episode VIII, so there’s that to look forward to.

Maryann Brandon was asked the same question, and she shared that we almost saw more of Simon Pegg’s character, the shady junk dealer Unkar Plutt who terrorises Rey at the start of the film on Jakku. She said: “There is a scene in the cantina, or our version of it, the Maz castle, where Rey, once she separates from Finn and wanders off, and Unkar Plutt is there, because he’s been tracking her because she stole the Falcon from him. And they have a confrontation and Chewie comes in and rips his arm off.”
