Courtney Cox back for Scream 6 and Neve Campbell is keen, depending on the script

With the sixth movie in the Scream franchise set to hit cinemas in less that a year – it films between June and August this year – we’re already getting some cool details about what to expect.

Early rumours about the plot are that a new killer is picking off survivors from previous Scream movies which has us wondering if we could see Hayden Panettiere’s Kirby, a fan favourite character from Scream 4, back as we reported she might be recently? I’d imagine there’d be some long faces if they brought her back after confirming she’s still alive (here), only to kill her off in an opening scene… still, it would be a very Scream thing to do, just ask Cotton Weary or Casey Becker.

However, one familiar face we do know is back is Courtney Cox’s Gale Weathers, who has been there since the first movie.

In a new interview, Cox was asked if she was returning and she replied in a most definite tone: “I got the script yesterday. And I haven’t read it yet. I just got it, and I’m so used to getting, you know, Shining Vale scripts, which are 26 pages, and I’m, ‘Whoah, I’ve got to read a script.’ I’m excited to read it.

“I don’t know if I’m supposed to say anything. Let me tell you the killer!”

In addition to this, the franchise’s star, Sydney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell is yet to be confirmed returning, though Campbell has said she’d return if the script is right: “Yeah, absolutely. It’s down to the strength of the story. I wouldn’t want to do it unless the script is good. It would be hard. But these guys did really well on this one, so I’m curious to see what would come next. So we’ll see.”

On the strength of what Cox has said, we’d have to imagine Campbell has the script, so watch this space.

After the fate of David Arquette’s Dewey in the last movie, we’d have to imagine Gale’s time could be coming to an end, which has us thinking about what returning directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett said about how the sixth movie needs to differ from the others. Gillet said: “This movie has to be willing to risk it all in order to subvert all of those expectations. And we’re so far down the rabbit hole of Scream movies, that it’s all up for grabs at this point.”

It’s understandable they would say this but one thing the Scream franchise has been famous for, right from the opening scene of the first movie, is killing off people you’d think were safe, so it makes me wonder exactly what could be ‘up for grabs’.

Whatever it is, I love this franchise and I really enjoyed the last movie, so I’m all in for a sixth adventure with Ghostface.

What say you all?

Scream 6 will be released on March 31st, 2023
