One of the most contentious parts of new (AKA Disney) Star Wars, was the line at the end of Rise of Skywalker that saw Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, tell a lady that her name is Rey Skywalker.
Now, presumably, she took that name because her real identity – Palpatine – brought with it, many negative connotations with the man who tried to rule the galaxy as a tyrant, but the taking of the Skywalker name seemed unearned in the movie and many fans were unhappy about it – personally, I wasn’t annoyed but I did think it was a silly final scene.
However, it seems that now we have an in-universe reason for the taking of the Skywalker name, directly from Ridley herslf as Rey.
Daisy Ridley on her return to Star Wars and making her peace with it
A new collectible from Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland is a Holocron that, when you insert Kyber Crystals, delivers lines from various Star Wars characters and now, thanks to the chaps at the HoloFiles, we have a break down of all Rey’s dialogue including the reason she felt she should take the name.
“Luke Skywalker was my master. So was his sister Leia. And her son Ben gave his life for me. I took the Skywalker name to honor them and their legacy.”
Truthfully, I quite like this explanation – Rey didn’t assume she was a Skywalker but rather wanted to honour the Skywalker name after knowing the whole family and wanting to keep that legacy alive… I’m ok with that.
A few other interesting tidbits from the collectible’s dialogue:
“I’ve studied the sacred texts of the Jedi. Do you know what the most important pages are? It’s the blank ones left at the end. Because those ancient teachers knew those lessons weren’t finished and never could be.”
In reference to Kylo Ren’s (Ben Solo) line about letting go of the past and destroying it if you have to – something many fans took as a sly attack on the movies that went before: “Ben was right about letting go of the past. But not about killing it. My task is to make something new. Not by killing the past, but by building on all that’s good in it.”
This collectible, and no doubt more to come, is clearly setting up the Rey movie which is set for release in the next few years, and has given us our first bit of information to bridge the gap between it and Rise of Skywalker.
Thoughts? I wanna hear ’em…
