Daisy Ridley on her return to Star Wars and making her peace with it

April 9th, 2024 by Marc Comments

Just a little over a year ago, at Star Wars Celebration, we learned that Daisy Ridley would be getting another bite at the Star Wars cherry with a New Jedi Order movie.

Directed by Saving Face and Girl in the River’s Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, it will take place fifteen years after The Rise of Skywalker and will see the return of Rey as a Jedi Master rebuilding the Jedi Order. I’ve said several times that Ridley and Rey deserve another shot at Star Wars and I’m here for it.

Now, the actress is talking about her return to Star Wars – after all, her journey in the sequel movies was far from smooth – and how she’s starting to come to grips with her place in the galaxy.

“I suppose I feel more like I’m owning it,” she says, “I suppose I owned it the first time. Basically, I’m an adult now. I certainly did not feel like an adult at the time. Obviously, personally, things have changed, and professionally, I’ve had lots of other experiences, and so I definitely feel like it’s a different thing this time.

There’s just a lot of joy with me and these films,” she goes on, “Honestly, if I wasn’t excited, I wouldn’t have done it. It feels like a great thing to be a part of.”

She’s keeping the plot, which she knows but is still to read the script, to herself but admits that while she wanted to return, she was a little apprehensive: “I didn’t say yes right away, Kathy [Kennedy] was like: ‘Take as long as you need.'”

But, she says, “why wouldn’t I [do it]? Yes, they have been divisive, but also they bring a lot of love and joy to a lot of people. It feels pretty amazing to be able to continue a character – like, can I even remember how to play her? It’s an interesting challenge as an actor to come back to something and try to figure out what’s changed for me and what’s changed for her.”

I fell in love with Rey in The Force Awakens and she still has a very warm place in my Star Wars love and I’ll never forget how awesome it was for my daughter to have her to look up to – though she always preferred Ahsoka – but at the sequels went on both my daughter and I became more and more disheartened but we still adore the Force Awakens and still hope that Rey gets the redemption she, and Ridley, deserve.

Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife.
