Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023: Dave Filoni, James Mangold and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy to direct new movies and Daisy Ridley’s Rey returning!

April 7th, 2023 by The Nerd Comments

Big news from Star Wars Celebration Europe as three new projects are announced and could prove to be very exciting in expanding the universe in new ways.

First off, we learned that all new Star Wars projects will span 2,500 years:

The main eras will be:

The Old Republic, which fans have wanted to see on screen for a long, long time.

The High Republic, which was kicked off with the recent multiplatform protect starting a couple of years ago but will be expanded in the upcoming Acolyte and Jedi Temple Adventures.

Fall of the Jedi, the prequel era.

Reign of the Empire, the original trilogy era.

Age of Rebellion, the original trilogy era – leading into Mando etc.

The New Rebublic and The Rise of the First Order, the time period  that The Mandalorian era is leading to, leading up to the time of the sequel trilogy.

“As you can see by all the television we’ve been doing, we’re exploring a lot of different storylines. This really spawns from what George Lucas said years ago, that he created Star Wars to move forward and backward along a mythological timeline,” Kathleen Kennedy said.

“Now we’re looking to broaden that timeline, building a rich future, expanding upon the present, going deep into the past to tell our stories, and we’re thrilled to be working with some of the best and most passionate filmmakers on projects that will span the past, the present and the future.”

Ok, so on to the big news.

Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight to write Star Wars movie after Damon Lindelof’s departure

first up, Dave Filoni, the man behind Clone Wars, Rebels, The Mandalorian, Ahsoka and more, will be given his own Star Wars movie that will be the culmination of Mandalorian, Ahsoka Skeleton Crew and more… could Ahsoka name dropping Heir to the Empire be more than a nod for fans?

Next up, James Mangold, director of Logan and the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, will direct a new movie focusing the first ever Jedi – that’ll be The Old Republic – Kathleen Kennedy called it a ‘Biblical Epic’. It’s exciting to know that we will see very different Star Wars movies moving forward.

The third movie will be directed by Saving Face and Girl in the River’s Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. It will take place fifteen years after The Rise of Skywalker and will see the return of Daisy Ridley’s Rey as a Jedi Master rebuilding the Jedi Order. I’ve said several times that Ridley and Rey deserve another shot at Star Wars and let’s hope this is just that. No word on if we’ll see Finn or Poe return but we’re optimistic…

While we got no names or release dates, we’d be hopeful that one of these will be hitting the Christmas 2025 date that we had previously heard for a new Star Wars project.

From the beginning of the Star Wars universe to the Mandoverse and then to the unchartered future, Star Wars is getting bigger by the minute and we’re here for it all.
