In a new interview with The New York Post about his History Channel series, The UnBelievable with Dan Aykroyd, Ghostbusters co-creator and star Dan Aykroyd opened up about the franchise’s current direction, suggesting that he nor fellow co-star Bill Murray are likely to return for future Ghostbusters films, writes Jason at Ghostbusters News.
“I don’t see that coming,” Aykroyd said when asked if he and Murray would suit up for future films, “I don’t see where they would need us to carry it on. They’ve got a whole new cast, and they’ve got whole new ideas.”
‘Sony wants more Ghostbusters…’ Dan Aykroyd talks franchise’s future on the big screen
Aykroyd, who conceptualized the original Ghostbusters before rewriting it with Harold Ramis, expressed his full support for the franchise moving beyond its roots: “I think probably they’re going to move on to advancing it beyond the originals, which they should.”
Ghostbusters returned to the big screen with 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, directed by Jason Reitman, shifting the action to the fictional town of Summerville, Oklahoma, where the Spengler family (joined by the original team) faced off against the return of Gozer the Gozerian.
Its follow-up, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which hit theaters earlier this year, brought the franchise back to New York City. While not a box-office juggernaut, Frozen Empire has found success in its home release, solidifying the series’ future.
It’s worth noting that Aykroyd did not mention co-star Ernie Hudson. As Winston Zeddemore, Hudson has arguably become the backbone of the franchise’s narrative continuity while campaigning for involvement in future projects. Also, Winston’s return would seemingly make the most sense, given that the character financially revived the Ghostbusters in Frozen Empire, relocating them back to NYC.
