‘Sony wants more Ghostbusters…’ Dan Aykroyd talks franchise’s future on the big screen

Dan Aykroyd, who reprised the role of Ray Stantz in recent Ghostbusters sequels, has been talking about paying close attention to Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire‘s backend, mentioning the box office total and its success on home release on a recent episode of Bullseye, writes our good friend Jason over at Ghostbusters News.

He says: “(Frozen Empire) just crossed the $200 million worldwide gross box office, and you can be sure that not every movie today or in the last few months has done that. All the fans turned out to see it, and it’s streaming. It’s a streaming hit now, and it’s going to be on Netflix. It’s got a DVD and Blu-ray.”

And while there’s been no word on another big-screen follow-up, Aykroyd clarifies that Sony wants to make more; however, cost and a healthy box office return remain the franchise’s biggest hurdles: “All the cast is great, and (Frozen Empire) has been a great success. Sony wants to do more of them. Of course, all of these cost too much, and everybody knows that, and if you can do them for a price, they can go on for a long time.”

Ghostbusters animated series [finally] officially going ahead at Netflix

While Frozen Empire was loved by a lot of fans and did fairly well, it did struggle to hold its own in cinemas; fans knew it would find its audience at home and in the merchandise, but the future of Ghostbusters on the big screen was always going to come down to how much the movies would cost to make. Given that the series started in 1984 being made on a small budget and by using creative, practical means, I feel that going back to that wouldn’t just save the franchise, it would bring it home in the truest sense.
