Ghostbusters animated series [finally] officially going ahead at Netflix

August 12th, 2024 by Marc Comments

Over two years after the initial announcement, Netflix’s animated Ghostbusters series has officially received the green light, with Elliott Kalan serving as writer, showrunner, and executive producer, Ghostbusters News reports.

Kalan brings a strong track record to the project, having served as the head writer for Netflix’s Mystery Science Theater 3000. He was also a longstanding writer for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and penned Marvel’s fan-favorite six-issue limited comic series Spider-Man and the X-Men.

The series will be a venture between Netflix and Sony’s Columbia Pictures Ghost Corps. Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, the Ghostbusters filmmaking duo, previously confirmed themselves as producers.

News of the series being greenlit should be all too surprising, as earlier this year, ahead of the annual Ghostbusters Day celebration commemorating the 40th anniversary of the original film, Sony Pictures Animation would post to X, proclaiming, “There’s something strange in the neighborhood… Our supernatural comedy series, based on Ghostbusters, is coming soon to Netflix.

Back in March, in promoting Frozen Empire, Kenan shared an update on the series, assuring that it was still very much in full development, saying:

“I just watched an entire art presentation for the show. I’ve seen the sets and the environments, and I just saw my first glimpse at a world of supernatural characters as realized by our brilliant creative team. All I can say is the work is being done as we speak. It’s in what we call full development. Scripts are being written, art is being created, and it’s a great time to be a Ghostbuster.”

In speaking of Frozen Empire, the film premiered on Netflix last month and despite only being available to those with ad-free subscriptions, instantly secured the #1 spot, receiving 10.2 million views in its first week.
