If, like us here at FTN HQ, you’re wondering when the fourth 28 Years Later movie is coming, the best we can do right now is assure you that it looks like it’s still in the pipeline, though when exactly is not so clear.
After the release of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, from director Nia DaCosta, Danny Boyle, who directed the original 28 Days Later and then the first in the new trilogy, 28 Years Later, said that the next movie would have already started filming but timing worked against them: “Because it’s set in an area of Britain [where] you can only film at certain times of the year. We ran out of time this year – we literally ran out of time – so it’ll be, hopefully, fingers crossed, next year.”
At the time, he added that the script was done and there’s definitely a desire from the fans to find out what comes next: “There’s the enthusiasm there, and Alex [Garland] has done a wonderful script for it.”

But that was then and this is now and there’s been very little in the way of updates since.
Until now.
In a new interview with Variety, Boyle once again confirms the next movie is coming, though he now seems less sure about when: “28 Years 3, or whatever it ends up being called, will get made because people keep asking about it. Quite when I’m not sure, but there’s a script – a very good script by Alex Garland.”
He goes on to confirm what we knew already – although it’s good to hear it again – and that’s that Cillian Murphy will reprise his role as Jim from the first movie back in 2002: “[It will have] a lot of Cillian Murphy in it. Whether he’ll take his kit off anymore, that I don’t know. He’s got the Oscar now.”
28 Days Later was the movie that rocketed Murphy to being the superstar he is now, so having him return to the iconic role some 25 (or more by then) years later will be exciting to see.
