DC and Warner Bros are fast-tracking the DCU Clayface movie for a September 11th, 2025 release date with the search for a director already well underway.
The movie, penned by Haunting of Hill House’s Mike Flanagan is described as a ‘Hollywood horror story that follows a B-movie actor who injects himself with a substance to keep himself relevant’ and is being produced by DCU overseers James Gunn and Peter Safran with a budget expected to be around $40m.
Batman and Gotham City make official DCU debut and we have loads of details and news
Word is that Flanagan is not available to direct the project himself, likely due to his Exorcist reboot at Universal, but WB and DC are keen to get someone else behind the camera with Truth or Dare’s Jeff Waldow and Speak No Evil’s James Watkins rumoured to be top of the pile.
Word is that Clayface in the movie is not expected to be a villain per se, as he often is when facing off against Batman, but rather a tragic figure; anyone who has read John Jackson Miller’s fantastic novel set in the Batman ’89 universe, Batman Resurrection, will see the vision for how the character can be done in such a vein and still be completely engaging and relevant.
In the comics Clayface has had several incarnations ranging from failed actor to a T-1000-like villain who can mimic anyone, so it’s going to be interesting see how the character is portrayed here.
James Gunn talks future of DCU, Creature Commandos, Superman, Peacemaker and more
Let’s not forget that the DCU’s first official entry, Creature Commandos, has already featured Clayface, right, portrayed by Resident Alien and Firefly’s Alan Tudyk, so I wouldn’t rule out this movie being the introduction to this version of the character – this being the large, misshapen one who can turn into anyone he pleases – and let’s also not forget that Gunn’s plan for the DCU was to have the same actors portraying characters in animation, games, movies etc, so we could feasibly see Tudyk in the role… and I would be ok with that.
With the search on for a director, the release date 18 months away and the script finished, expect this to start filming pretty soon.
Thoughts? I know you have them…
