Details on new Ghostbusters movie teases who will be leading the team…

July 28th, 2022 by Marc Comments

On Ghostbusters Day 2024, last month, we learned that a new Ghostbusters movie, a sequel to the wonderful Ghostbusters: Afterlife, was in development and there was much rejoicing.

But now we have some cool details on the movie and who will likely be the lead when it hits cinemas next Christmas.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife Director Jason Reitman, who is co-writing the new movie with Afterlife co-writer Gil Kenan has said that the next movie was planned out even before Afterlife hit our screens: “We had the story before we finished Afterlife. And we have been crafting this with as much care as it took to build Afterlife into a worthy sequel… We’re writing as quickly as we can.”

Ghostbusters animated movie coming!

The movie is codenamed Ghostbusters: Firehouse and will be a direct sequel to Afterlife, picking up with the Ecto-1 arriving in the old Ghostbusters HQ with Winston Zeddemore himself, actor Ernie Hudson and a weird, blinking light in the containment unit… all likely setting up what comes next.

All this was confirmed by Reitman who announced the new movie, saying: “The last time we saw Ecto-1, it was driving back into Manhattan: the home of Ghostbusters. That’s where our story begins. The code name is FIREHOUSE.”

But it certainly seemed that the new movie was aiming to give Winston his dues finally and would be putting him front and centre.

“The character of Winston Zeddemore and Zeddemore Industries figures strongly into the future of Ghostbusters,” Reitman says.

Hudson himself said on Ghostbusters Day: “Rest assured, we have a lot of Ghostbusting ahead. I’ll just say, if need be, the flight suit still fits.”

The upcoming Ghostbusters VR game Ghostbusters Unleashed, which seems to be canon, also has Winston heading the Ghostbusters team (here) and, on top of all this we’re getting a new Ghostbusters comic from Dark Horse that will officially continue the Afterlife story (here), so it’s hard to believe, for a fan like ne that’ been praying for new Ghostbusters content since Ghostbusters II, that we’re entering such a golden age for the boys – and girls – in grey.

“When we first talked about Afterlife three years ago at Ghostbusters Day, our hope was that it would lead to all kinds of great storytelling, that it wouldn’t be a one-off film, but the opening of a door,” Reitman said, adding, “And today, that promise comes true. If you’re a Ghostbusters fan, you’re about to have access to all different decades of Ghostbusters history as well as the future, characters you haven’t met yet, and places you haven’t gone yet. If you’re a Ghostbusters fan, you’ve got a lot coming your way.”

Ghostbusters: Firehouse, is set to release on December 20th, 2023.
